2009 Just leave already

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Tuesday, December 29, 2009,

New Year’s Resolutions:  Meaningless promises people make to themselves every year in which they have little to no hope of keeping.  That’s an entry taken from Carl’s unabashed dictionary.  I gave up on making resolutions years ago.  You see every year while I was in high school I had one resolution - to “hook up” with this girl I had a crush on.  (Let’s call her Grace.)  I never did “hook up” with Grace.  I fantasized about her, followed her around like a puppy dog and even t...

The Spirit of Christmas Specials Past

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Monday, December 21, 2009, In : Media

Well another holiday season is upon us and here I am waxing nostalgic about Christmas’ past. Generally, I am not that sentimental but I have been reflective of late probably as a bi-product of my 40 plus years. I have reached a certain age where the realization that there are fewer years ahead of me than there are behind is among my daily musings and nothing reminds most people of their youth more than Christmas. I grew up one of nine children in public housing yet my mother and father...

Operation Misery

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Saturday, December 19, 2009, In : Economy
As we all know, this is the time of year many people spend counting their blessings and giving thanks. Of the things in my life that I am grateful for is the fact that I currently own the car I am driving – free and clear. It’s a good thing too since I can in no way afford to make payments on a car – new or used. My car is not flashy. It is not new. It has a few dings and scratches on it but it works (knock on wood.) With it I am able to go to job interviews, to the grocery store,...

Tiger, Tiger's Fading Light

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Saturday, December 12, 2009, In : Media
On November 27, 2009, at around 2:30 a.m. Tiger Woods had a car accident near Isleworth as he was leaving his home in his 2009 Cadillac Escalade SUV.  From that moment on America has been held hostage again by the media as they feed us sordid details surrounding the accident and the alleged affair(s) involving Woods.  I have to admit that up until recently I was one of the few people in the country who not following the Tiger Woods story very closely.  This was despite the fact that I could ...

Junk Jobs

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Thursday, December 10, 2009, In : Economy
Anyone who job hunts via the Internet knows that there are many false job offers out there. For example, Craigslist’s, which has gotten a bad rap due to the actions of some of its users, has job classifieds which are known to be packed with bogus ads. Unfortunately, this does not come as a surprise to users of Craigslist. Lately, however, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend occurring among “reputable” job boards. ‘HotJobs’ and ‘CareerBuilder’ both seem to have more and more questi...

“Is President Obama’s desire to seek compromise greater than his desire to seek change?”

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, In : Politics
Since the beginning of the Obama presidency, both liberal and conservative pundits alike have been trying to lay even money on what will be its undoing.  (Though with conservatives the speculation has been as much wishful thinking as it has been informed speculation.)  Commentators who run the political spectrum from conservative pundit and MSNBC contributor, Patrick J. Buchanan, to co-founder and editor-in-chief of the ‘Huffington Post’ Arianna Huffington have both contributed to this co...

About Me

My Humble Opinion is a collection of opinion articles, observations and commentary by me Carl Mitchell.  I am a native Missourian with degrees in English and Journalism.  My political views are mostly liberal except on some issues.  (If you decide to follow my blog you’ll have to guess which ones.)  I have gone from extreme poverty to being one who has bounced back on his feet several times.  That is not to say that my blog will be whiny and humorless.  In fact, I will try to inject some humor into my observations as I lend commentary to today’s issues, trends and current events.  My other articles can be found on Associated Content, here  and here.
