Well as the House of Representatives is taking another one of its many vacations ( August 9 - September 12), they have again left a small matter of massive unemployment behind them. (What a relief it must be for them to escape such a depressing subject.) The high unemployment rate is especially problematic for those who have been out of work the longest and have exhausted their benefits. This group of the long term unemployed is what has come to be known as the ‘99ers’. When Congress r... Continue reading ...

Well, the US Congress returned from its 4th of July holiday this week to get back to a little unfinished business like the 2.1 million who are awaiting word on when the extension of unemployment benefits will resume. Word is now that the bill extending unemployment benefits will not be taken up until the week starting July 18. According to the Huffington Post, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has predicted that the Senate will pass the extension sometime next week after nearly a mon... Continue reading ...

I have a friend who has been out of work for nearly a year now and contrary to what some politicians and people who believe they will never join the ranks of the unemployed believe, she has been looking hard for work. She has applied for jobs that are below the skill and salary level that she is used to as that is also a requirement in the state she resides in order to receive unemployment benefits. She has driven around for hours looking for help wanted signs and has filled out countless a... Continue reading ...

As more than a million Americans are facing an uncertain and 4th of July which will hardly be a celebratory one, comes the news today 6/30/10 that another attempt pass a bill to extend unemployment benefits for the jobless has again been defeated. (I now count 5 attempts to past this legislation which has been thwarted by Republicans and fiscal conservatives.) With our economy still in tatters, this game of chicken that politicians are playing is causing an immense hardship in the lives of ... Continue reading ...

SEE THE LATEST (JULY 19) UPDATE ON THE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS EXTENSION HERE: Honorable members of the U.S. Congress:
This letter is in response the June 24th defeat of the bill to extend unemployment benefits. As you know, the final vote on the bill was 57-41. I am addressing this letter to two different groups: The first group I am addressing this letter to are those who opposed the extension and the second group I am addressing are those who supported its passage. To those who opposed th... Continue reading ...

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE LATEST (JULY 19) UPDATE ON THE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS EXTENSION BILL. Well the forces of darkness have finally prevailed. Yesterday Senate Republicans and one Democrat - Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) - killed a bill to extend unemployment benefits and provide aid to state governments on the grounds that the measure would have added too much to the federal deficit. This was despite the fact that the bill’s ten-year deficit impact had been reduced by Democrats from $134 billio... Continue reading ...

Several years ago I was laid off from my job and had to apply for unemployment benefits. I explained how I became unemployed to the state employment agency. They contacted my ex-employer and after they verified the information I and my former employer had given them, I began receiving unemployment payments. After several months, my former employer emailed me and floated the idea of a recall to me. I was excited. My ex-employer had not actually said that I would be recalled or even given ... As we all know, this is the time of year many people spend counting their blessings and giving thanks. Of the things in my life that I am grateful for is the fact that I currently own the car I am driving – free and clear. It’s a good thing too since I can in no way afford to make payments on a car – new or used. My car is not flashy. It is not new. It has a few dings and scratches on it but it works (knock on wood.) With it I am able to go to job interviews, to the grocery store,... Continue reading ...

Anyone who job hunts via the Internet knows that there are many false job offers out there. For example, Craigslist’s, which has gotten a bad rap due to the actions of some of its users, has job classifieds which are known to be packed with bogus ads. Unfortunately, this does not come as a surprise to users of Craigslist. Lately, however, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend occurring among “reputable” job boards. ‘HotJobs’ and ‘CareerBuilder’ both seem to have more and more questi... Continue reading ...

About Me My Humble Opinion is a collection of opinion articles, observations and commentary by me Carl Mitchell. I am a native Missourian with degrees in English and Journalism. My political views are mostly liberal except on some issues. (If you decide to follow my blog you’ll have to guess which ones.) I have gone from extreme poverty to being one who has bounced back on his feet several times. That is not to say that my blog will be whiny and humorless. In fact, I will try to inject some humor into my observations as I lend commentary to today’s issues, trends and current events. My other articles can be found on Associated Content, here and here.
