Well, as the members of Congress have slithered out of town to enjoy their Independence Day holiday - a holiday many of their constituents will spend worrying if and when their unemployment benefits will be restored - a story made for the media has immerged – the Russian spy ring saga. Last Sunday ten people in Yonkers, Boston and northern Virginia were arrested and accused of being part of a Russian espionage ring. The 10 accused had apparently been living under false names and deep cove... Continue reading ...

Okay so I admit it – I’ve tricked the reader. For although both parts of the headline are equally preposterous, only one part is true – the first part. The site Raw Story is reporting that former Prime Minister Tony Blair has been named as the 2010 winner of the US award the Liberty Medal for his “commitment to conflict resolution.” The National Constitution Center is apparently giving Blair the medal for his work in Northern Ireland and Kosovo and is obviously ignoring his blind... This is not going to be an anti-Israel or anti-Semitic (there is a difference) rant since I am neither but here goes - the United States needs to rein in Israel. One opportunity for the US and the world to do so comes with the attack by Israeli naval commandos on the Mavi Marmara, the largest ship in a flotilla that was carrying activists and humanitarian aid past the blockade of the Gaza Strip, to Palestinians living there. Nine people, including Furkan Dogan, a 19-year-old born in Troy, N... Continue reading ...

Always the innocent are the first victims.... So it has been for ages past, so it is now. ~ J. K. ROWLING, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneSomething very weird and disturbing is happening in China lately. In this ancient civilization that accounts for 20% of the world’s population and which has survived civil wars and rapid changes to its economy in its centuries of existence a new threat has arisen –its children are being murdered by madmen. I am not talking about the much discuss... Continue reading ...

A small, 7-year-old boy emerges from a plane at Moscow's Domodedovo airport. He is scared, has been in flight all the way from the US and is very much alone except for a note in his pocket reading, “This child is mentally unstable. He is violent and has severe psychopathic issues. I was lied to and misled by the Russian Orphanage workers and director regarding his mental stability and other issues. After giving my best to this child, I am sorry to say that for the safety of my family, ... Continue reading ...

The awesome force of nature never ceases to amaze and alarm me. By now everyone has heard of the eruption of The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull on 14 April. The plume released by the volcano's eruption is forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes and air travel to be canceled all over western Europe. Here are a few pics.

Since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti back on January 12 events there and around the world have developed at a staggering pace. There has been a Telethon which has raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $61 million dollars, ‘We are the World’, has been re-recorded by over 80 celebrities, and of course and many online events such one I participated in – Bloggers United – have been staged. In contrast to these charitable events, there has also been the callousness of statem... Continue reading ...

Well, a lot has happened since I blogged about the earthquake that struck Haiti last Tuesday, January 12. · Since then a 5.9 magnitude tremor struck just north-west of Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, January 20th. · The death toll has been estimated to be anywhere from between 100k and 200k. · 75,000 have been buried in a mass grave near Port-au-Prince. Many bodies still lay uncollected in the streets. · 1.5 million people have been left homeless · Bizarre and ill-timed comment... Continue reading ...

Well, it’s happened again. People who had nothing to begin with find the nothing they did have snatched away from them by the huge hand of calamity. By now, everyone in the world has learned of the disastrous 7.0 magnitude earthquake that was centered near Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti, on Tuesday 12, 2010. (Haiti is one of the poorest country in the world ranking 149th on the Human Development Index of 182 countries.) The International Red Cross, which is sending money, supplies and... About Me My Humble Opinion is a collection of opinion articles, observations and commentary by me Carl Mitchell. I am a native Missourian with degrees in English and Journalism. My political views are mostly liberal except on some issues. (If you decide to follow my blog you’ll have to guess which ones.) I have gone from extreme poverty to being one who has bounced back on his feet several times. That is not to say that my blog will be whiny and humorless. In fact, I will try to inject some humor into my observations as I lend commentary to today’s issues, trends and current events. My other articles can be found on Associated Content, here and here.
