On MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show of July 20, Ms. Maddow posed an interesting question as she wrapped up coverage of the pseudo-controversy concerning ousted USDA official Shirley Sherrod. The manufactured controversy involved what appeared to be a videotaped admission by Ms. Sherrod that she had discriminated against White farmers. After viewing the tape, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack fired Sherrod and even the NAACP initially condemned her. The truth it is now coming out that the video... Continue reading...

Now that - for the time being - the great unemployment extension impasse seems to finally be coming to an end within the next day or two, I’ve decided to follow in the footsteps of literary greats such as Lewis Carroll, Dr. Seuss and Sarah Palin and make up my own word for this post – ‘filibluster.’ You see as everyone knows, three other attempts were made to pass the extension of unemployment benefits each one failing because Republicans (and Democrat Ben Nelson), who are suddenly d... At first I wasn’t going to write about the recent resolution that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) unanimously passed asking the Tea Party to repudiate racist leaders and actions within that movement. I had already seen scores of articles all over the Web on the topic and I generally like to delve into subjects that are not so heavily covered. I am writing about the NAACP’s rather mild resolution because of the conservative blogosphere. NAACP Presi... Continue reading...

As anyone who owns a TV, computer, Smartphone, radio or has read a newspaper in the last few days knows by now actor-director Mel Gibson’s new career as a recording artist has gotten off to a very rocky start. I’m referring of course to audios that the site radaronline first obtained of Gibson railing against his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, in which he threatens her and uses the n-word and other slurs and expletives. ( Listen to the tape here.) One of the things Gibson can be hear... Continue reading...

Well, the US Congress returned from its 4th of July holiday this week to get back to a little unfinished business like the 2.1 million who are awaiting word on when the extension of unemployment benefits will resume. Word is now that the bill extending unemployment benefits will not be taken up until the week starting July 18. According to the Huffington Post, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has predicted that the Senate will pass the extension sometime next week after nearly a mon... Continue reading...

It sounds like a laudable idea – pass a law that a) limits defense spending to the $548.9 billion specified in the federal government’s fiscal year 2011 budget b), uses the additional $159.3 billion set aside for “discretionary” operations abroad to relieve the full federal income tax burden on every American’s first $35,000 earned per year, or up to $70,000 per year for married couples c) uses any remaining funds to pay down on the national debt. If 14 Democrats including John Con... Continue reading...

Well, as the members of Congress have slithered out of town to enjoy their Independence Day holiday - a holiday many of their constituents will spend worrying if and when their unemployment benefits will be restored - a story made for the media has immerged – the Russian spy ring saga. Last Sunday ten people in Yonkers, Boston and northern Virginia were arrested and accused of being part of a Russian espionage ring. The 10 accused had apparently been living under false names and deep cove... Continue reading...

Okay so I admit it – I’ve tricked the reader. For although both parts of the headline are equally preposterous, only one part is true – the first part. The site Raw Story is reporting that former Prime Minister Tony Blair has been named as the 2010 winner of the US award the Liberty Medal for his “commitment to conflict resolution.” The National Constitution Center is apparently giving Blair the medal for his work in Northern Ireland and Kosovo and is obviously ignoring his blind... I have a friend who has been out of work for nearly a year now and contrary to what some politicians and people who believe they will never join the ranks of the unemployed believe, she has been looking hard for work. She has applied for jobs that are below the skill and salary level that she is used to as that is also a requirement in the state she resides in order to receive unemployment benefits. She has driven around for hours looking for help wanted signs and has filled out countless a... Continue reading...

As more than a million Americans are facing an uncertain and 4th of July which will hardly be a celebratory one, comes the news today 6/30/10 that another attempt pass a bill to extend unemployment benefits for the jobless has again been defeated. (I now count 5 attempts to past this legislation which has been thwarted by Republicans and fiscal conservatives.) With our economy still in tatters, this game of chicken that politicians are playing is causing an immense hardship in the lives of ... Continue reading...

About Me My Humble Opinion is a collection of opinion articles, observations and commentary by me Carl Mitchell. I am a native Missourian with degrees in English and Journalism. My political views are mostly liberal except on some issues. (If you decide to follow my blog you’ll have to guess which ones.) I have gone from extreme poverty to being one who has bounced back on his feet several times. That is not to say that my blog will be whiny and humorless. In fact, I will try to inject some humor into my observations as I lend commentary to today’s issues, trends and current events. My other articles can be found on Associated Content, here and here.
