What Could Happen on November 3, 2010: One Post Mid-Term Vision of America

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Monday, September 6, 2010, In : Politics

As anyone who is even a casual poll watcher knows, Democrats are not doing well nationally.  According to a recent Gallup poll of registered voters Republicans lead by 51% to 41% in a weekly tracking of 2010 congressional voting preferences.  This is in spite of the fact that neither the respondents to this poll nor the rest of America are able to refer to the GOP’s plan for post-election America upon which they can make their decision.  This is also in spite of the fact that the respondent...

Letters from the Edge: The Unemployed Speak

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, In : Economy

As more than a million Americans are facing an uncertain and 4th of July which will hardly be a celebratory one, comes the news today 6/30/10 that another attempt pass a bill to extend unemployment benefits for the jobless has again been defeated.  (I now count 5 attempts to past this legislation which has been thwarted by Republicans and fiscal conservatives.)  With our economy still in tatters, this game of chicken that politicians are playing is causing an immense hardship in the lives of ...

Open Letter to the U.S. Congress Regarding Failure to pass the Unemployment Extension

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Monday, June 28, 2010, In : Economy

SEE THE LATEST (JULY 19) UPDATE ON THE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS EXTENSION HERE:

Honorable members of the U.S. Congress:

This letter is in response the June 24th defeat of the bill to extend unemployment benefits.  As you know, the final vote on the bill was 57-41.  I am addressing this letter to two different groups:  The first group I am addressing this letter to are those who opposed the extension and the second group I am addressing are those who supported its passage.

To those who opposed th...

Is President Obama Finally Growing a Pair?

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Friday, May 14, 2010, In : Politics

Is it just me or has it seemed that someone has put something in President Obama’s Wheaties or that maybe he’s switched from decaf to caffeinated?  Has our soft-spoken, Commander in Chief finally put a bit of the ol’ fire and brimstone into his oratory of late?  Two cases in point come to mind:

The first were the comments he made during a news conference he held on the White House Rose Garden on 3/14/2010.  See the video of the conference here.  During the news conference he gave execu...

Dirty Tricks: Republican’s Ace in the Hole for the 2010 Midterms?

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Thursday, April 29, 2010, In : Politics

During midterm elections the conventional wisdom is that anti-incumbent sentiments run pretty high potentially harming the majority party.  However, some recent activities by the GOP have suggested that they may not be willing to rely solely upon those anti-incumbent feelings to sweep them to victory in November.  Republicans seem to be looking for an ace in the hole and what might that ace be?  Plain, old-fashioned election fraud.  According to a story in The Orange County Register groups of...

Whose Armageddon will the 2010 Midterms Be?

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, In : Politics

During the historic battle over Healthcare Reform forever tanned GOP House Minority Leader John Boehner likened the bill to “Armageddon.”  I’ve been thinking a lot lately about that hyperbole and how it might apply to the midterm elections that are coming this November.  Of course, I’m not alone.  Writers of op-eds articles in prominent newspapers all across the country have been making predictions about what the outcome of these elections may be since back in 2008.  The conventional ...

2009 Just leave already

Posted by Carl Mitchell on Tuesday, December 29, 2009,

New Year’s Resolutions:  Meaningless promises people make to themselves every year in which they have little to no hope of keeping.  That’s an entry taken from Carl’s unabashed dictionary.  I gave up on making resolutions years ago.  You see every year while I was in high school I had one resolution - to “hook up” with this girl I had a crush on.  (Let’s call her Grace.)  I never did “hook up” with Grace.  I fantasized about her, followed her around like a puppy dog and even t...

About Me

My Humble Opinion is a collection of opinion articles, observations and commentary by me Carl Mitchell.  I am a native Missourian with degrees in English and Journalism.  My political views are mostly liberal except on some issues.  (If you decide to follow my blog you’ll have to guess which ones.)  I have gone from extreme poverty to being one who has bounced back on his feet several times.  That is not to say that my blog will be whiny and humorless.  In fact, I will try to inject some humor into my observations as I lend commentary to today’s issues, trends and current events.  My other articles can be found on Associated Content, here  and here.
